About the City
Be’er Sheva | Heart of the Negev Desert
Founded in the 10th century BCE, Be’er Sheva is known as the capital of the Negev Desert, and is one of Israel’s fastest growing cities. Be’er Sheva is located at the northern tip of the Negev Desert and is an hour’s train ride from downtown Tel Aviv. Many of Be’er Sheva’s residents are immigrants from Arab countries, Ethiopia, the Former Soviet Union. Be’er Sheva also boasts Israel’s largest population of Jews from India. Be’er Sheva is close to several nearby Bedouin communities and hosts a colorful open air Bedouin marketplace each Thursday. Finally, Be’er Sheva is home to Ben Gurion University, which has a large student population and a vibrant culture for young adults. Almost 20% of residents of Be’er Sheva are between the ages of 20-29!
Why Choose This Program?
Choose Beer Sheva for a taste of desert living and because our apartments are located in a student center– which means that Fellows in Be’er Sheva benefit from being a part of local social activities and university life (Israelis generally enter college at age 21).
As part of Israel Pathways, you will experience Israel outside of the classroom! Our Fellows take part in eight different weekend-long seminars throughout the country. These seminars bring together Israel Pathways participants from all of our programs throughout the country, as well as Israeli locals, so you will have the opportunity to meet a broad group of peers living all over Israel! We are very proud that Israel Pathways has been the most popular provider of Israel Teaching Fellows since the program’s inception in 2011. References are available upon request.
