In addition, the school has chosen to break the language barrier by having native English speakers teach its students English.

These studies were made possible thanks to the MASA project, which brings young Americans to Israel to voluntarily teach English in schools across the country.

(Detroit Jewish News) — Growing up as a Conservative Jew in Bloomfield Hills, I knew the basics of the religion and of Israel. I went to Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills. I celebrated holidays, went to shul and believed in God. That is, until I was 17 and my dad passed away. At that point, I pushed aside my religion.

Ten years later, I found myself with a master’s degree and no job, wondering what I was doing with my life. An email came from my sister about a 10-month program in Israel where I cold explore the country and also gain teaching experience, something great for my resume. Now he is more than halfway through a pilot 10-month service program conceived to provide English teachers in underprivileged communities.

“My background is in criminal justice, and I worked with children in Toledo and Michigan, and then in an adult special-needs program in Wayne, where I grew up,” said the 25-year-old. “Then I found myself out of work, came to Israel, and found out about this program.” (Click here to learn more.)
