Rehovot
Rehovot Operated by Ma’ase Olam
About Us:
Ma’ase Olam is building a movement of leaders committed to working together to ensure that students on the margins of Israeli society get a quality education. We recruit a diverse group of passionate leaders who can meet the challenges that come with working as an English teacher in Rehovot, a thriving city just outside of Tel Aviv. Our holistic pre-departure educational program ensures that our participants will be well prepared to both maximize their impact as an educator in Israel and equip them with an understanding of the work needed to close Israel’s deepening achievement gap.
Ma’ase Olam’s Israel Teaching Fellows program is enhanced by Ma’ase’s standing as a powerful social justice volunteer organization in Israel, offering volunteer and leadership programs for over 700 young people all over Israel. Our Israel Teaching Fellows are partnered with a group of Israeli peers, who will work as your co-teachers and partners for your 10-month stay in Rehovot.
In 2010, Ma’ase was awarded the Sderot Conference prestigious Award for Social Responsibility for our achievements in working for a more inclusive and equitable Israel. Recently, Ma’ase was named the winner of the prestigious Speaker of the Knesset Quality of Life Award for our work to promote tolerance and narrow social gaps in Israeli society.
About the City:
Rehovot, located 12 miles south of Tel Aviv, is a thriving city that is home to students and young people. Rehovot’s downtown area on tree-covered Herzel St is home to vibrant nightlife, diverse restaurants – including some of the best Yemenite food in Israel – cafes, and an outdoor shuk (market) where you can buy delicious and fresh produce. Rehovot is safe and easily accessible by trains and buses to Tel Aviv and other central locations and is near one of Israel’s most beautiful beaches, Palmachim.
With a population of 114,000, Rehovot is a host city to a large Ethopian community and many Russian immigrants have come to call Rehovot home. This diversity makes Rehovot an ideal site for meaningful social work and is a great place to truly experience life in Israel. Ma’ase Olam’s strong relationship with the city’s municipal government and with members of the community has ensured that our class of 2011-2012 Fellows have felt at home in Rehovot.
Why Choose Our Program?
Ma’ase Olam connects our Fellows with a group of Israeli peers, allowing them an incredible opportunity to truly immerse themselves into Israeli society through joint programming and volunteer service, setting the stage for a deep and meaningful cultural exchange. Ma’ase Olam ties our program with the movement for social justice in Israel through our professional volunteer and leadership development training including holistic pre-departure educational program, enrollment in Hebrew language classes, continual educational seminars throughout your 10 month stay in Israel, and guided tours throughout Israel. Our continuing education seminar topics have included Zionist History, the role of religion in the Israeli state, women’s rights, the history of social movements in Israel, and more.
All of Ma’ase Olam’s Israel Teaching Fellows receive a monthly stipend of 1,300NIS (about $360, the largest stipend of any ITF provider). We feel that it is vitally important to provide a high stipend, recognizing that it allows our participants some financial wiggle room while in Israel.
As Ma’ase Olam Israel Teaching Fellows, our participants become a part of the larger Ma’ase organization. We are working together to build our movement, and welcome our 2012-2013 Fellows as partners in our community of over 700 volunteers from all over Israel and the world. Together we are taking an active and central role in shaping Israel’s future.
