Rehovot
Rehovot Operated by Ma’ase Olam
About Us:
Ma’ase Olam is building a movement of leaders committed to working together to ensure that students on the margins of Israeli society get a quality education. We recruit a diverse group of passionate leaders who can meet the challenges that come with working as an English teacher in Rehovot, a thriving city just outside of Tel Aviv. Our Israel Teaching Fellows collaborate with a group of Israeli peers, who will work as your co-teachers and partners for your 10-month stay in Rehovot.
The program is operated by the Ma’ase organization, which specializes in volunteer and leadership programs for more than 700 young people all over Israel, in order to create a movement for social change. For almost a decade, Ma’ase has been running successful volunteer programs and is the recipient of several national awards in the field, including the Speaker of the Knesset Quality of Life Award for its work promoting tolerance and narrowing social gaps in Israeli society, and the Sderot Conference Award for Social Responsibility.
With Ma’ase Olam, in addition to teaching, you will take part in professional training, leadership development, and social justice sessions to learn about social issues in Israel and develop the knowledge and skills to become an effective agent for change. Topics include: democracy in Israel, minorities in Israeli society, and the meaning of a Jewish State.
About the City:
Rehovot, located 12 miles south of Tel Aviv, is a thriving city that is home to students and young people. Rehovot’s downtown area on tree-covered Herzel St. is home to vibrant nightlife, diverse restaurants, cafes, and an outdoor shuk (market) where you can buy delicious and fresh produce. Rehovot is safe and easily accessible by trains and buses to Tel Aviv and other central locations.
With a population of 114,000, Rehovot is home to a large Ethiopian community and many Russian immigrants. This diversity makes Rehovot an ideal site for meaningful social work and is a great place to truly experience life in Israel. Ma’ase Olam’s strong relationship with the city’s municipal government and with members of the community has ensured that our Israel Teaching Fellows have felt at home in Rehovot.
Why Choose Our Program?
With Ma’ase Olam, you will partner with a group of Israelis the same age. The Israeli and English-speaking participants undergo join programming and carry out service work together. This will set the stage for a meaningful and deep cultural exchange.
You will benefit from the expertise and benefits of Ma’ase, a large organization working for social change and education equality.
Through Ma’ase Olam’s service-learning model, you will explore underlying issues of educational inequality in Israel.
You will take part in a leadership development component that focuses on training you to become change-makers in your home communities.
You will participate in Ma’ase Olam’s holistic pre-departure educational program, which prepares you to maximize your impact as an educator in Israel, and equips you with an understanding of the work needed to close Israel’s achievement gap.
All of Ma’ase Olam’s Israel Teaching Fellows receive a monthly stipend of 1,300NIS (about $350, the largest stipend of any ITF provider). We feel that it is vitally important, as partners with our fellows, to provide a high stipend, that allows our fellows some financial wiggle room while in Israel.
